IT carve-out at equipment manufacturer MWM

Case Study

Challenge

After taking over a fully owned subsidiary of Deutz AG, the process and IT functions needed to be carved out of the Deutz AG Group and a self-sufficient IT organization built up for the new company MWM GmbH.

Success

Atreus performed the IT carve-out on time and budget. Thanks to our no-nonsense methods and strict result orientation, the project goal was fully achieved.

Interview with Klaus Buchborn-Klos, Managing Director of MWM

Why did you get Atreus on board?

After the acquisition of MWM GmbH, the goal was to get the IT carve-out completed as quickly as possible and build up a self-sufficient system landscape and IT organization for MWM. In view of the complexity of the situation, it was necessary to work with a team of two interim managers right from the word go.

"The challenge of the carve-out was to create a basis upon which our IT could then be further developed into a competitive factor. To do this, we used two experienced project managers from Atreus."

What tasks did the interim managers take on at MWM?

To begin with, the project contents and goals needed to be defined, the framework conditions determined on the basis of a rapidly conducted situation analysis and fundamental decisions made. Furthermore, the initially “purely technical” carve-out brought about many changes in business processes and our organization, which enlarged the planned project scope. The Atreus managers needed to actively manage numerous secondary topics to ensure that the project goal was met

What demands did you place on the Atreus IT experts?

The interim managers had to be able to set up, manage and operate an autonomous IT landscape for MWM – without frictional losses and within the shortest of time periods. A self-sufficient IT organization had to be created from scratch, so we needed experienced managers who immediately knew what was required and could start implementing the solution without long familiarization delays. As this all needed to be achieved in a very limited timeframe, good judgement and an ability to make decisions were required.

"The Atreus managers were responsible for ensuring the functionality of the IT systems of our globally active company with 1,000 employees."

Klaus Buchborn-Klos has been Managing Director of MWM GmbH in Mannheim since 2008, where he is responsible for the finance and controlling divisions. A management graduate, he has more than 20 years of top-management experience in companies in the capital goods industry.

What challenges did Atreus have to master?

Quickly clarifying the status quo was without doubt a challenge, so that the project proper could begin. At the start of the carve-out, it was not possible to conduct a detailed analysis. This meant that in the course of the project, new realizations demanded further decisions, which of course raised the level of project risk

How did you measure the success of the project?

On the accomplishment of the project goals on time and on budget. In this case, we remained below both and all objectives were met without restriction.

"The Atreus managers handled the project risks with a strict approach and always realistic objectives."

What organization was set up to steer the project?

The decision-making instance was made up of the MWM management board, the two Atreus managers and the Atreus partner. To implement the project, it was first necessary to build up an IT team and transfer the ordinary operations. But independent of the formal organization, I had to be in a position to make urgent decisions immediately at any time in my capacity as managing director.

"The Atreus managers were men of action, who rolled up their sleeves and obtained the support they needed in the company to make a success of the project."
