trust2core GmbH is a start-up of Deutsche Telekom and the first new company for the commercialization of a narrowly defined base technology. An autonomous company needed to be set up and the technology developed to product maturity.
Atreus succeeded in building trust2core into a functional business unit. It was able to build up one of the biggest teams of experts for security know-how within the Telekom Group and position it as a start-up provider of IT solutions.
“Merkel Phone” – that was indeed a catchword that raised the project’s profile. On the one hand, it summarized what trust2core stands for quite well: secure communication on a device as can be bought anywhere and that has all the normal smartphone functions. But on the other hand, it didn’t truly reflect the market potential. The protection of confidential communication is not just an issue for heads of government; it is important in many areas of business life, all the way through to industrial processes. Hacking and malware attacks and wiretapping attempts are constant threats for everybody concerned with R&D, RfPs or finance in an international environment.

Dr. Heinrich Arnold is in charge of the Telekom Innovation Laboratories at Deutsche Telekom AG, with sites in Germany, Israel and Silicon Valley. Before joining Deutsche Telekom AG, he worked for Mercer Management Consulting and was a member of the board of the German-Chinese research enterprise Bicoll Group and of Medigen.
Primarily, Deutsche Telekom has very extensive competence in all facets of telecommunication. But T-Labs, the division in which trust2core was developed, is a new concept. Based a little outside the customary organizational structures of the company, we bring together the expertise of Telekom with a flexibility that is easier to achieve within smaller companies. These units are intended to achieve commercial independence with a strong innovation orientation, open-mindedness and market focus.
Having precisely the right talent available at short notice is the key service that Atreus can provide. The job was to start a small company with 30 staff from scratch. In a small start-up like this, the responsibilities of the director are entirely different to those of a manager in a large company. We wanted a manager who knew the start-up situation, loved it and could master it. We found him at Atreus.
